On July 4th, 2013, Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay, and Mike Smith announced, via their website Swearnet.com, that they have acquired the rights to 'Trailer Park Boys' from creators Mike Clattenburg, Michael Volpe and Barrie Dunn. Rights to the franchise apparently do not include the soon-to-be-released third movie, tentatively titled, 'Trailer Park Boys 3: Don't Legalize It!' ', but ownership of all other episodes, specials and intellectual property have been transferred.

The take-over announcement was made through a video which, among other things, depicted Wells, Smith and Tremblay negoiating a deal with Ricky, Julian and Bubbles for a sum of $9,000 which would allow the film crew to follow them around once more.

All original cast members, with the exception of Barrie Dunn and Richard Collins, are returning to the show. On July 10th, it was announced that Cory Bowles will be reprising the role of Cory, though there's no word on whether or not Michael Jackson will be returning as Trevor. On July 20th, 2013, Mike Smith confirmed, via his twitter, that the eight season will have a total of 10 episodes. Filming started on July 17th, 2013.

All season 8 episodes were released on Netflix on September 5, 2014.
